When the calendar year has changed, we come up with a list of New Year’s resolutions. Each resolution can either be achieved or be part of the following year’s list once again. Some have dropped the idea of making any list simply because of not achieving the goal items, especially the significant ones. They argue, “What good is goal setting if there is no goal achievement?”  Goal achievement is seen as the better of the two. Why? In our everyday lives, we see a lot of activities happening around us. Some are simple routines which do not have to go through any kind of evaluation. Others are steps and procedures that lead to achieving goals. Do all achievements, however, have their corresponding goal settings? Let us take two achievements: a salesman’s first sale and a toddler’s first step. On his own or with the help of his team, a salesman...

If you asked your colleagues or acquaintances for their definition of goal setting, they’d probably all have similar answers: setting your goals means picking something to which you aspire - be it personal, professional, spiritual, or other - and pursuing it until you’re satisfied.   What most people won’t include in their definition of goal setting are the specific, verifiable, and quantifiable targets that constitute the path to success. Psychologists and behavioral therapists employ a very different definition of goal setting than the layman; they recognize the value of setting S.M.A.R.T. goals. Here, “S.M.A.R.T.” is acronym that stands for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realist, and Time-targeted goals. A goal that meats all five of these criteria is an attainable goal indeed.   Compare, for example, two mid-level employees who both have aspirations of turning their ho-hum nine-to-five careers into high-powered executive positions. One of these work-a-day drones decides to start small...

Setting a ‘Goal’ is pretty easy, everybody does that! Sudden resolutions and ‘going-on-forever’ targets take you nowhere. But this does not mean one should not set goals at all or that setting a goal is total waste. No! Instead of ‘goal setting’ there should be ‘SMART goal setting’. This makes the attainment of the goal more ‘real’ as it creates a framework according to which a goal is to be achieved. It sets a traceable course and milestones towards the attainment of goal. This way the attainment of goal becomes more ‘real’; irrespective of its standard. Be ‘Specific’ while setting a SMART goal You should be specific and clear about your goal. The more you go in details of that, the more realistic will be the outcome. SMART goal setting differentiates between ‘I want to be rich man’ and ‘I want to earn a million per annum for the coming...

We’ve all been there before – in that uncomfortable place, weeks, months, or even years after having set an important goal for ourselves – realizing that we’ve come up short.   Contrary to what that creeping feeling of self-doubt is telling you in that moment, your failure to achieve your goals has much less to do with your work ethic than it does with the time you spent planning your path to success. There’s an old, tired adage about how an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure; like most old, tired adages, it’s completely true, and more people would discover how to achieve their goals if they abided by it’s message.   Maybe you’re the kind of person who never feels the need to set goals. You breeze through your personal and professional obligations, meeting each challenge as it arises, never paying a second thought to the...
