Smart Goal Setting

Setting a ‘Goal’ is pretty easy, everybody does that! Sudden resolutions and ‘going-on-forever’ targets take you nowhere. But this does not mean one should not set goals at all or that setting a goal is total waste. No! Instead of ‘goal setting’ there should be ‘SMART goal setting’. This makes the attainment of the goal more ‘real’ as it creates a framework according to which a goal is to be achieved. It sets a traceable course and milestones towards the attainment of goal. This way the attainment of goal becomes more ‘real’; irrespective of its standard.

Be ‘Specific’ while setting a SMART goal

You should be specific and clear about your goal. The more you go in details of that, the more realistic will be the outcome. SMART goal setting differentiates between ‘I want to be rich man’ and ‘I want to earn a million per annum for the coming years, say, for 5 years by launching a particular product’.

So prior you set a goal, answer these very important questions and make them clear in your mind:-

  1. ·         What is the actual goal you want to attain?
  2. ·         Where do you want to attain that goal?
  3. ·         How that goal should be attained?
  4. ·         When should or by when should that goal be attained?
  5. ·         With whom do I want to achieve this goal?
  6. ·         Under what circumstances and limits this goal should be attained? What is the reason behind the attainment of this goal?
  7. ·         What are the other ways to attain this goal?

The SMART goal should be ‘Measurable’

Measurable goal is the one in which comparison can be made between what you set and what you attained and so, measurement can be done. More detailed, defined and clear goals are easier to achieve.

For instance, say, ‘I want to be happy’ is not a clear goal but ‘I will be happy if buy this house’ is definitely clear.

The SMART goal should be ‘Attainable’

Only attainable goals should be set. For that, do a feasibility test – time, money, energy and will power involved in the process of its attainment. If it seems impossible at the first instance, it would be really ‘difficult’ to attain it.

‘Difficult’ and not ‘impossible’ – this is up to your will power and focus. Prioritise you obligations and duties in your life and see if you can really plan to work on your goal.

Shoot for the stars and in the end, if not stars, you will end up being in the sky at least!

The SMART goal should be ‘Relevant’

Do ‘relevance test’ on your goal. Not just the goal, but the action plan too. Ask yourself if the goal you’ve set is of any relevance to your life or not. After that, look at your action plan and make out if it has relevance to the goal you have set.

Keep a note of one important thing that sometimes the action plan for the attainment of goal may not look relevant at first glance but in reality it may be the best one. Like, you may get yourself equipped with the essentials required for the attainment of your goal which you are lacking at present.

There is always one way or the other to reach the destination you set with clear mind.

The SMART goal setting and the ‘Time’ factor

Now ‘time’ is one factor where most of the people go wrong. They either go too tight or too loose when it comes to setting deadlines or a timeframe for attainment of something in particular. Keep your deadlines and the timetable flexible. Rigidity will make a negative impact on the whole process, and sometimes, it might lead to coming up short.   There is lesser learning and more stress staying to rigid timelines.

‘Positivity’ not to be forgotten

‘Positivity’ is of immense importance, rather the foundation of any ‘smart’ goal. It can turn some of the most difficult or rather the ‘impossible’ ones into achievable ones. Focus on ‘doing’ and avoid looking at ‘not doing’. You never know, when your strong will power combined with focus and positivity brings something miraculous for you!
