We all have goals, right? Well… actually… not exactly… We have plans. We plan to make more money in a few years, we plan to find a better job, we plan to go on vacation in Europe and we plan to start a family when the time is right. But all these are not goals. They are ‘wishes’, ‘desires’, or maybe ‘plans for the future’ at best. Even those of us, who are familiar with the concept and definition of Goal Setting often set false goals for ourselves. This is actually one of the main reasons why only 10%-15% of people who have the motivation and skill to succeed, consistently achieve the results they desire....

  Hello. My name is Darlene Whitehurst and I am a goal.a.holic.  I think everyone has a form of “holic” in them. Let’s face it; we are all addicted to something. My addiction just happens to be setting goals… (ok…sequins and stilettos, too!).  My addiction became evident back in my 30’s. It took me years to admit it; I was in denial about it in the beginning. It all started with just a few goals at a time, typically on the weekends. Over time, I began setting goals during the week. Before I knew it, I was goal-setting first thing in the morning until late in the evening hours and on the weekends. My addiction was not limited to just one form of goal- setting; any form sufficed…as long as I got my fix. My need to set and achieve goals was becoming more progressive each year!  Eventually my addiction started...

On Friday I attended my first “Women in Business Lunch” in Kampala. This was together with approximately 30 other lovely, intelligent, talented and determined women (a well balanced mix of Ugandans and ex-paths). I was grateful to be invited by the founder of this great initiative, Tracy Hathorn. Tracy Hathorn, an inspiration for women in business in Uganda. Tracy Hathorn is the CEO of Uganda Meat Producers Cooperative Union Ltd., and has been involved in setting up the Norwegian Business Centre in Kampala. She has for several years, been a recourse person for Norwegian businesses and projects who wants to work or establish themselves in Uganda. I met her in my job as a Project Manager for Design without Borders where she assisted us and gave us access to her wide network of businesses, organizations and recourse people in Uganda.
